The partnership with West Shore Community College (WSCC) and the WSCC Humankind Series is exemplary of how great collaboration can impact a community. On Saturday, November 9, over 300 community members came together to hear the all-star afro-cuban group The Pedrito Martinez Group, featuring Grammy-Nominated Cuban drummer Pedrito Martinez.
One of the challenges with this type of music is that it is infectious and makes people want to dance. So, how do we promote dancing in a safe environment, in a theatre? The answer, build a dancer floor over the orchestra pit section of the theatre to level the floor, and see what happens.
By the second half of the show, patrons filled the dance floor! Pedrito himself came down for a quick dance, and encouraged the shy members of the crowd to join.
Thanks to master carpenter and theatre technician Mik Mikula, for his tireless work on this project and ensuring everyone’s safety!
