MAD ANGLER TRIO

May 29 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The Mad Angler Trio

Crispin Campbell-Cello (Interlochen and the Neptune Quartet) “The Deep Soul of the Cello”

Joe Wilson-Dobro (Steppin In It) “The High Lonesome sound of the Dobro”

Steve Stargardt-Piano (Traverse City Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra) “The Flowing Harmony of the Piano”

Inspired by the work of Interlochen Poet Michael Delp (AKA The Mad Angler) the band explores an uncanny region where a classically based cellist, a bluegrass dobro player and a jazz pianist find common ground in an ever-changing musical conversation.

Giving a nod to Bach, some deep roots blues and Americana, with a natural connection to jazz standards, The Mad Angler Trio takes you on a listening adventure not to be missed.

Joining the trio is multi-genre violinist Jeremy Cohen who is experienced in a broad range of musical styles, including classical, tango, bluegrass, jazz, Latin, Western Swing, Americana and others.  Cohen is recognized nationally as an expert in multi-genre string playing in the modern age.

While living in Los Angeles in the 1980’s Cohen performed on stage, in movie soundtracks, and on Hollywood television series. After relocating with his family to the San Francisco Bay area, Cohen performed for two years as the lead violinist with the stage production Forever Tango. He founded his Violinjazz band (violin, guitar, bass, and piano) in 1986 and Quartet San Francisco (string quartet) in 2000. He has worked, taught, toured, and concertized with both groups for the last three decades.

Cohen maintains an active coaching studio in, California, and conducts in-person and online workshops on technique and improvisation for string players. Cohen publishes his compositions and arrangements under the Violinjazz Publishing imprint, offering books of solo etudes, duets, string quartets, and works for string orchestra.

Cohen’s recording projects with Quartet San Francisco have garnered eight Grammy nominations. His latest project, “Raymond Scott Reimagined,” was nominated for the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Original Composition for Cutey and the Dragon (composers Raymond Scott and Gordon Goodwin).
